Camerons BMS: Supply Chain Pressure & Demand

Camerons BMS is a building maintenance and service company committed to doing business responsibly. As supply chain pressure to provide a Public Procurement Notice (PPN 06/21)–compliant Carbon Reduction Plan grows, particularly as clients demand credible Net Zero commitments, Camerons reinforced their purpose-led ethos and acted early. Rather than risk losing contracts to competitors who moved faster, they chose to lead.

At The Green Accountants, our role was to help Camerons not just meet compliance requirements but embed sustainability into the heart of their operations.

Facing Procurement Challenges

Without a verified Carbon Reduction Plan, Camerons risked losing major contracts and tenders. This isn’t just a challenge for Camerons, this trend is accelerating across every sector. According to research from the University of Bath, large organisations increasingly require carbon reporting from SME suppliers, creating robust demand for measurement and reporting services (Hampton et al., 2025).

Camerons needed to demonstrate their sustainability commitment to stay compliant, retain client trust, and reinforce the company’s values.

From Compliance to Commitment

To support Camerons’ transition, we created a roadmap that went beyond compliance. Eddie and his team completed accredited Carbon Literacy Training, gaining certification from the Carbon Literacy Project. This equipped them with the knowledge and confidence to identify and implement carbon-reduction strategies across their business.

Building on this foundation, and in collaboration with Greentally Climate Tech, we developed an independently verified Carbon Reduction Plan fully aligned with government standards. The plan set admirable, ambitious, yet achievable targets.

To communicate Camerons’ commitment, we also developed a dedicated sustainability page on their website, enabling them to publicly share their journey, commitments, and certifications with clients and partners.

Together, these steps built proof of purpose, showing that Camerons BMS wasn’t just complying, but leading in an industry facing mounting supply chain pressure.

Practical Steps That Deliver Results

For many SMEs, sustainability can feel like an extra burden, another job on top of everything else. But as Camerons found, taking action doesn’t have to be costly or complicated. By starting small and focusing on efficiency, they unlocked long-term savings while meeting compliance and strengthening company values.

In fact, a UK government study found that SMEs could achieve energy savings of up to 25% through cost-effective efficiency measures, yet many miss these gains simply because they don’t know where to begin (Department of Energy & Climate Change, 2014).

Here are some of the strategies Camerons BMS adopted, simple, practical steps that any SME can take:

  • Digitalise paperwork and processes: Adopting job management software cut time, waste, and admin costs.
  • Buy better, not more: Sourcing sustainable materials and ordering directly to site reduced double-handling and transport costs.
  • Invest in waste reduction: Recycling and reuse initiatives lowered disposal fees and demonstrated responsibility to clients.
  • Explore renewables: Feasibility reviews for solar energy and switching to 100% renewable tariffs reduced exposure to energy price volatility.
  • Engage suppliers: Conversations about sustainability uncovered shared cost-saving opportunities across the value chain.

Each of these actions saved Camerons BMS both money and carbon, proving that sustainability isn’t an extra cost, but an investment that pays back.

Results and Lasting Impact

Camerons BMS is now reaping the rewards of their focus on sustainability. They’re fully PPN 06/21–compliant, publicly transparent through an independently verified Carbon Reduction Plan, and backed by a carbon-literate team that turns awareness into action.

But the impact goes far beyond compliance. The business is now more efficient, resilient, and attractive to clients, winning work that requires carbon credentials and building trust with existing partners.

Camerons’ journey sends a powerful message to other SMEs: you don’t have to choose between doing good and doing well. Start small, learn fast, and the results will follow in your energy bills, in your client relationships, and in the pride your team feels for doing business the right way.
